中东呼吸综合征（Middle East respiratory syndrome，MERS）是由一种新型冠状病毒（MERS-CoV）感染而引起的病毒性呼吸道疾病，2012年MERS病毒首现于沙特，继而在中东其他国家及欧洲等地区蔓延，致死率为40%。冠状病毒是一组能够导致人类和动物感染发病的病毒，能够引起人类发生从普通感冒到严重急性呼吸综合征（SARS）的多种疾病。
目前，科学家正在开发多种中东呼吸综合征疫苗，然而尚无有效疫苗被批准应用于人体。目前惠升生物研发团队已实现了在生菜瞬时表达系统中稳定表达目标蛋白，经验证对中东呼吸综合征冠状病毒（MERS-CoV）有效，下一步将进行工艺研究。由于目前未大规模爆发该疾病，该品种市场无法预测。但由于中东呼吸综合征冠状病毒的高传染性和高致命性，一旦疫情大规模爆发后果将不堪设想，届时将产生爆发性需求。本项目为惠升生物储备产品，一旦疫情大规模爆发，即可作为国家战略性产品进行应用。

Middle East respiratory syndrome （MERS）is a viral disease caused by a new type of coronavirus (MERS-CoV). The MERS virus occurs firstly in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and then spreads in other countries in the Middle East and Europe. The mortality rate of it is 40%. Coronavirus is a group of viruses that can infect human and animal and can causes a variety of diseases from the common cold to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
At present, scientists are developing a variety of Middle East respiratory syndrome vaccines, but no effective vaccine has been approved for use in the human body.
