流感病毒可分为甲（Ａ）、乙（Ｂ）、丙（Ｃ）三型。其中，甲型流感依据流感病毒血凝素蛋白（HA）的不同可分为1-16种亚型，根据病毒神经氨酸酶蛋白（NA）的不同可分为1-9种亚型，HA不同亚型可以与NA的不同亚型相互组合形成不同的流感病毒。而禽类特别是水禽是所有这些流感病毒的自然宿主，H7N9禽流感病毒是其中的一种。H7N9亚型流感病毒既往仅在禽间发现，在荷兰、日本及美国等地曾发生过禽间暴发疫情，
但未发现过人的感染情况。
截至2017年，已有多个H7N9疫苗备选株通过了WHO安全性评价，可用于疫苗研发。在此基础上， H7N9灭活疫苗、减毒活疫苗以及重组疫苗均已取得较好的研究结果。人用H7N9禽流感疫苗研发已成为目前研究的热点。国内外多家药企也先后提交疫苗临床试验申请，其中部分药企已进入临床试验阶段。

Influenza virus can be divided into A (A), B (B), C (C) three types. Among them, A influenza according to influenza virus hemagglutinin (HA) can be divided into 1-16 subtypes, and according to the virus neuraminidase protein (NA) can be divided into different 1-9 subtypes. Different subtypes of HA can be combined with different subtypes of NA to form different influenza viruses. Poultry, especially waterfowl, is the natural host of all these influenza viruses, and the H7N9 avian influenza virus is one of them. H7N9 subtype influenza virus has only been found in poultry. In the Netherlands, Japan and the United States and other places had occurred H7N9 between poultry outbreaks, but did not find human infection.
By 2017, a number of H7N9 vaccine candidate strains have passed WHO's safety assessment and can be used for vaccine development. On the basis of this, H7N9 inactivated vaccine, live attenuated vaccine and recombinant vaccine have achieved good results. Research and development of H7N9 avian influenza vaccine used to human has become a hot topic. Several domestic and foreign pharmaceutical companies have submitted vaccine clinical trial applications, and some of them have entered the clinical trials of pharmaceutical companies.
